On the 30th of April, Freedom from Torture hosted a webinar on the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill with speakers including refugees, torture survivors, LGBTQI+ campaigners and asylum policy experts.

This webinar was chaired by Mathilda Della Torre, who is a human rights campaigner, founder of Conversations from Calais, and the Activism Manager at Ben and Jerry’s, who we are currently collaborating with to call on the Home Office Ministers to end LGBTQI+ detention.

Among the speakers was Joel Mordi, who sought safety in the UK after organising Nigeria’s first Pride protest in 2019, but was detained during the asylum process. After being granted refugee status, Joel has continued to tirelessly campaign for LGBTQI+ and refugee rights, including through multiple collaborations with us and his own project Two Refugees Walking.

The other speakers included Nadine Tunasi, who is the Survivor Speak Out Manager at Freedom from Torture, Jonathon Kazembe, who is the Expert by Experience Manager at Refugee Action, and Sonya Sceats, Chief Executive of Freedom from Torture.
