On the 19th of May, Garden Court Chambers hosted a webinar on the disproportionate impact of recent legal and policy changes on LGBTQI+ people seeking asylum, and what we can all do to support them.
This webinar was chaired by Zehrah Hasan, who is a Barrister at Garden Court Chambers and our Consultant Lawyer. The speakers included:
- Ayesha Aziz, our Legal Service Manager, who covered the impact of the Nationality and Borders Act (2022)
- Karen Doyle, Trainee Solicitor at Wilson’s LLP in partnership with us, who gave an overview of recent case law
- Helen Foot, Barrister at Garden Court Chambers, who spoke about Safe State Designations under Article 59 of the Illegal Migration Act (2023)
- Zehrah Hasan, who talked about representing LGBTQI+ individuals in immigration detention
- Ro Carter, one of our Casework Coordinators, who shared their experiences of advocating for LGBTQI+ people in asylum accommodation
